What Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale?

Copy section link

This document acts as official proof that a motorcycle has changed hands. It shows that someone has sold the vehicle and someone else has bought it. The bill of sale for motorcycles usually lists the vehicle’s make, model, VIN, mileage, and how much was paid for it.

Keep in mind that the motorcycle bill of sale form is not the same as a title. But it can help prove who owns the vehicle, especially when applying for registration or a new title.

It’s simple to make your own document with the help of a bill of sale template for motorcycles. Just follow these steps:

  1. Write down the full names, addresses, and phone numbers of both the buyer and the seller.

  2. Include all vehicle details: year, make, model, color, VIN, and the current mileage.

  3. Mention the purchase price and how the buyer paid — such as cash, check, or bank transfer.

  4. Add the date of sale and the city and state where the sale took place.

  5. If there’s no warranty, include a note that the motorcycle is sold “as-is.”

  6. The parties sign the motorcycle bill of sale PDF. If your state requires it, a notary must also put their signature and stamp the document.

Can I Register a Motorcycle With a Bill of Sale?

Yes, in many states, the generic bill of sale for motorcycles is part of what you need to register the vehicle. Still, most DMVs will also ask for:

  • The signed-over title;

  • A valid photo ID;

  • Proof of insurance;

  • A filled-out vehicle registration form.

Some states allow you to register the motorcycle before you get a title, especially if the bike is older or from a private sale. But rules differ, so it’s best to check directly with your state’s DMV.

If you’ve bought a motorcycle and the seller didn’t give you a title, don’t worry. You may still be able to apply for one with your bill of sale. Here’s a quick overview of how that works:

  1. Contact your state’s DMV or visit their website to read the exact steps for your area. The requirements may differ in various states.

  2. Bring your signed bill of sale motorcycle PDF showing the buyer, seller, date of sale, and full details of the bike.

  3. Show a past registration or a VIN check. Some places may also ask for an affidavit from the seller or a bond.

  4. Submit a title application and pay the required fee.

  5. After reviewing everything, the DMV will give you a new title under your name.

Using a bill of sale motorcycle is a simple way to legalize the sale of your vehicle. Besides, it’s often needed for legal and registration purposes.

In several states, evidence of motorcycle purchase necessitates a generic bill of sale for motorcycle. Yet even in states where this document isn't legally mandated, possessing one can preempt potential disputes regarding the bike's purchase or sale.

Some states stipulate notarization of the bill of sale for added security and authentication purposes. For a clearer understanding, you can explore a motorcycle bill of sale example.
